From the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Ch 8 . Scroll about halfway down the page to see the list of virtues.  The remainder of the chapter deals with Franklin’s “how-to” method of increasing in the virtues he had listed, and is an interesting read.

Here are some links to lesson plans from a character education website. The lesson plans are based in part on a video series, but some of it seems usable without watching that first.  They list plans by character trait (i.e. trustworthiness, responsibility, kindness) I believe they are secular…

Lesson Plans for Middle School

Lesson Plans for High School

The Virtue of Temperance

Filed under: temperance — blogofvirtues @ 3:20 pm

Temperance is the first virtue that perfects man’s ability to act well with one’s self from within one’s self.

For it brings order to the concupiscible appetite, and thus to the emotions of love, hate, sensible satisfaction, desire, aversion and sorrow as they bear upon a pleasant good.

Temperance is primarily about desires for the greatest pleasures…

The Virtue of Justice

Filed under: justice — blogofvirtues @ 3:06 pm

Here is an online article on the virtue of justice.  It starts:

Justice is the virtue that perfects the will. It is defined as the constant and perpetual will to render each person his due.

There are three different kinds of justice that correspond to the three basic relations that form the structure of life within society.  Corresponding to each relation is a certain type of debt.  First, there is a relation of one individual to another, and it is commutative justice that bears upon this relation.  Secondly, there is a relation between the individual person and the social whole.  It is general justice, or legal justice, that bears upon this particular relation.  Thirdly, the social whole is related to the individual person and is the subject of a kind of debt.  Distributive justice orders this relation.  We will treat each one individually…

Mercy: some Old Testament verses

Filed under: copywork and memorization, mercy — blogofvirtues @ 3:04 pm

For a comprehensive search on the word “mercy” or any other word, go to Douay-Rheims Bible Online and click on “search” on the top righthand side. Non-Catholics can use Blue Letter Bible and use the tools on their first page – this is a great resource, I wish there were as good a Catholic version! )

The word MERCY is used over 300 times in the Old Testament alone, so here is only a small sampling! (The Psalms, Proverbs, Wisdom, and Ecclesiasticus/Sirach have many mentions of “mercy”.)

Exodus 15:13 - In thy mercy thou hast been a leader to the people which thou hast redeemed: and in thy strength thou hast carried them to thy holy habitation.

Exodus 20:5-6  Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me:  And shewing mercy unto thousands to them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Exodus 33:19  He answered: I will shew thee all good, and I will proclaim in the name of the Lord before thee: and I will have mercy on whom I will, and I will be merciful to whom it shall please me.

Numbers 22-27   And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:  Say to Aaron and his sons: Thus shall you bless the children of Israel, and you shall say to them:  The Lord bless thee, and keep thee.  The Lord shew his face to thee, and have mercy on thee.  The Lord turn his countenance to thee, and give thee peace.  And they shall invoke my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

Deut 7:9-10  And thou shalt know that the Lord thy God, he is a strong and faithful God, keeping his covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments, unto a thousand generations:  And repaying forthwith them that hate him, so as to destroy them, without further delay immediately rendering to them what they deserve.

2Chron 20:9 For if you turn again to the Lord: your brethren, and children shall find mercy before their masters, that have led them away captive, and they shall return into this land: for the Lord your God is merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if you return to him.

Psalms 4:2 When I called upon him, the God of my justice heard me: when I was in distress, thou hast enlarged me. Have mercy on me: and hear my prayer.

Psalms 6:3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak: heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.

Psalms 12:6 But I have trusted in thy mercy. My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation: I will sing to the Lord, who giveth me good things: yea I will sing to the name of the Lord the most high

Psalm 32:5 He loveth mercy and judgment; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

Psalm 84:8 Shew us, O Lord, thy mercy; and grant us thy salvation.

 All of Psalm 118 (117 in Douay-Rheims)

All of Psalm 136 (135 in Douay-Rheims)

Prov 3:3 Let not mercy and truth leave thee, put them about thy neck, and write them in the tables of thy heart

Prov 14:21 He that despiseth his neighbour, sinneth: but he that sheweth mercy to the poor, shall be blessed. He that believeth in the Lord, loveth mercy.

Prov 21:21 He that followeth justice and mercy, shall find life, justice, and glory

Isaiah 49:

13 Give praise, O ye heavens, and rejoice, O earth, ye mountains, give praise with jubilation: because the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy on his poor ones.
